Join Food & Wine Trails’ Bourbon & Blues Experience

Adelman Travel’s Food & Wine Trails division, a designer of exclusive, epicurean cruises and tours, is pleased to offer their exciting new Bourbon & Blues tour and river cruise for the spring of 2024.  The adventure will be hosted by Rebecca Robinson of Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP), a non-profit dedicated to the preservation, education and appreciation of Zinfandel grapes and wines, along with top Zinfandel winemakers Shauna Rosenblum of Ridge Vineyards and Miro Tcholakov of Miro Cellars & Trentadue.  All are welcome to join the cruise, which will also feature delicious wines provided by the hosts.

Cruise guests will enjoy an intimate, all-inclusive experience aboard American Queen Voyages’ newest riverboat, the American Countess, christened in 2020.  The American Countess will leave from Memphis and cruise down the mighty Mississippi.  Along the way, the ship will make several stops, allowing guests to explore the colorful history of cities and towns along the fabled river before disembarking in New Orleans.

In addition to the itinerary presented by American Queen Voyages, Food & Wine Trails has added a Bourbon & Blues pre-cruise option, which will include two nights in Louisville to experience the distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, including legacy distilleries Angel’s Envy and Jim Beam; one night in Nashville to check out the diverse music scene; and a final night in Memphis to savor the city’s famous barbeque and blues prior to boarding the cruise.  During the cruise, a special Food & Wine Trails shore tour in Natchez will allow guests to enjoy the southern hospitality, culture and iconic homes of this Mississippi town. Following the cruise, Food & Wine Trails will offer an optional one-night stay in New Orleans.

Additional features exclusively for Food & Wine Trails guests include onboard receptions, wine seminars and a Winemaker’s dinner with your cruise-tour hosts.

A $50 per person shipboard credit bonus is available for bookings made by March 31, 2023.

How to be good to your pets when you’re traveling for business

Keeping in touch with pets when you’re traveling for work could be just the thing to help you recharge after a day of meetings and networking. We can’t prove it but face-to-face time with your furry (or feathered or hooved) friends is probably good for your overall wellbeing. Pet cameras, two-way radios and other tech toys let you talk and play with your pets and deliver treats from afar. Keep reading for suggestions.

Get an automated feeder.

Picture it. Travel day: You made it to your gate with time to spare… and then remember you didn’t fill your pet’s food bowl. The solution? Automated pet feeders that can be programmed to dispense food or treats on schedule.

Consider an interactive pet cam.

No doubt you’ve wondered how often your pet wanders into forbidden areas when they think no one’s around. Invest in a pet or security camera you can connect to and view over your smart device. For extra razzle dazzle, add a two-way radio or a laser pointer you can manipulate virtually. Your pet will either really love it or tear your entire home to pieces trying to figure out where you’re hiding. The pet cam might also help you figure out who eats your snacks when you’re away. Jorge Cruz, BCD’s Executive Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing confessed he’s a HUGE fan and regular user of PetChatz, a two-way device that proclaims itself “the Digital Daycare for the Home Alone Pets.”

Take them with you.

Pets and business trips? We love this idea. Just don’t invite them to your best and final presentation. Do make sure you’re educated on the rules and regulations for traveling with pets vs. service animals. Fully trained service dogs are typically permitted on planes and trains, provided they meet all legal requirements.

Know before you go:

  • which destinations allow travel with pets
  • emotional support animals, comfort animals, companionship animals, and service animals in training are not service animals and may be subject to different rules, restrictions and considerations
  • fees and transportation regulations may vary for pets, service dogs, cargo pets and carry-on pets
  • the recommended distance or length of time pets/services animals should fly
  • how far in advance you should book pet ticketing
  • where in the airport or train station your pet/service animal can relieve itself
  • what documentation you’ll need to provide, e.g., ID tags, proof of vaccination, health certifications
  • kennel and carrier requirements (where needed)
  • applicable animal quarantine laws

Return home bearing gifts.

Pick up a couple of surprises to show your spoiled pet bestie how glad you are to see them. You can’t miss with toys, plushies, cuddles and extra snacks. You may want to grab treats or pizza for your favorite humans, too.

Shift your focus to people risk management

In a guest blog, Jorge Cruz, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing at BCD, explains why now is the right time to shift duty of care from travel risk management to people risk management.

By Jorge Cruz, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing & Sales, BCD Travel

BCD’s Business Travel Trends for 2022 report alerted us to the increased need to expand the duty of care beyond business travelers to include all employees. This broader scope shifts the focus to people risk management to take work-from-anywhere employees into consideration.

Jorge Cruz, Executive Vice President, Global Marketing and Sales, BCD Travel

We surveyed 674 business travelers worldwide to get a better idea of the current traveler experience. While more than three-quarters of business travelers said their employer treats traveler health, safety and security as a priority, only 36% of travelers said their employer takes care of their safety and security when working remotely.

Below I’ve outlined further findings from our survey and what you employers can do to help travelers and remote employees feel safe and secure wherever they are located.

Shift the focus of travel risk management to people risk management. In our work-from-anywhere era, employers must consider safety outside of the traditional office and communicate policies to their employees. Of the business travelers surveyed, 25% said they don’t know what their company does to ensure safety and security while working remotely, so make sure you’re keeping all employees updated about new and existing policies.

Allow anytime, anywhere check-ins. While employees are traveling, it’s paramount to have regular check-ins to confirm they’ve arrived at their destination, that they feel safe in their accommodations and ensure they are equipped to do their job. BCD Alert and TripSource® can aid travelers and security managers with “anytime, anywhere” check-ins. These technology solutions offer in-app communication with location-based emergency alerts and simple “I’m safe” status checks for travelers. If you find yourself dealing with a potentially dangerous situation, using these solutions provides a reliable and direct way to communicate.

Offer a pre-trip briefing. A pre-trip briefing doesn’t have to be reserved for a high-risk destination. It can be just as helpful to employees who are traveling to an unfamiliar area. Driving in a city I’ve never been to is stressful, so I like to research which routes to take to understand my surroundings. Feeling uncomfortable driving in a new destination is true for 43% of our respondents. Another 44% feel unsafe while walking in the streets and 40% do not feel safe while using public transportation. Fear of the unknown is common, so what can you offer employees ahead of these trips to help alleviate these stressors?

Ensure a smooth transition back to work when returning from a trip. A post-trip briefing is an easy way for employees to provide feedback on the trip and serve as a time to discuss any bumps that occurred along the road. You’re likely to meet with travelers after they return to work to discuss outcomes from the business trip, so take some extra time to open the conversation for a bigger discussion. Our survey shows that 39% of business travelers do not receive any type of support to ease them back into work following a trip, and 16% said they don’t know if such support exists. Offering personal time off and mental or physical health checks may be necessary in some situations.

Practice personal safety procedures. Travelers must stay vigilant in taking their own safety precautions. I like to think of this as traveling smart rather than being fearful. When I arrive at a hotel, I always take time to locate the emergency exits nearest to my room, the hotel restaurant or anywhere else I may be in the building. Double locking my door brings me peace. The majority of our travelers surveyed also agree that this contributes to their sense of security. Checking the destination’s medical requirements and having clear instructions about what to do in case of emergency were among the top measures that help travelers feel safe and secure.

As employers, our duty of care has always served to protect our business travelers, but as our workplace environments change, so should our policies. Employee wellbeing extends beyond business travel now, and we will continue to adapt to changes to mitigate risks and ensure safety no matter the location of an employee.

4 ways to tackle business travel program data

How to transform data into actionable insights that help you make good business decisions for your managed travel program.

Travel managers want their travel program data to generate insights—not just reports. Here are some strategies to help transform your mountain of data into gold.

  1. Set the right KPIs.

Choose key performance indicators (KPIs) that align with your program’s goals. This will give structure to your data and help you measure success.

  1. Look at the big picture.

Avoid viewing reports in isolation because it’s easy to miss larger trends. Instead, look for the why behind the what. Once you know the reasons behind spend, your potential actions become much clearer.

  1. Create stories.

Business intelligence involves telling highly relevant, persuasive data stories, personalized and delivered to your target audience in easy-to-understand ways. Finding the most compelling stories also means gathering data from a wider, less structured set of sources, including booking channels, GPS information, supplier ratings and even social media. Telling data stories designed to resonate with company leaders, travelers or suppliers helps you sell your ideas faster and influence your program’s performance more effectively.

  1. Go beyond reports.

Reports and analyses are part of business intelligence, and using them gives you many benefits. But, pushing further into more complex analytics and modeling opens a door to a whole new world of possibilities. Journey deeper into your data to get ahead of budget problems, adjust policy, drive volume, find gaps, benchmark your program internally or externally and adjust KPIs, all while taking good care of your travelers.

Department of Homeland Security Extends REAL ID Deadline

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced another extension to the REAL ID deadline.  The previous deadline was May 3, 2023.  The DHS has extended the deadline by 24 months, with May 7, 2025, being the new deadline to attain a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card.

The extension is due to in part to the continued impact of Covid-19, which created a backlog of driver’s license applications and renewals.  The new deadline will give states sufficient time to ensure all residents can obtain a REAL ID compliant identification.  The DHS is also using the extra time to implement innovations that will make the process more efficient.

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following a 9/11 Commission recommendation that set minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses.  Beginning May 7, 2025, all travelers 18 years and older will need a REAL ID compliant identification or other TSA-acceptable form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, to board domestic flights.

Please click here to go to the Department of Homeland Security website for the most up to date, detailed information regarding REAL ID.
