Corporate Travel Management News and Tips

Why should companies participate in Corporate Social Responsibility?

October 25, 2018 | For Travel Managers

In recent years, there has been an increased focus on businesses acting in a sustainable and responsible manner, putting the greater good ahead of profitability to ensure that the world we live in doesn’t decay for the sake of money. Here at Adelman, we take corporate social responsibility (CSR) very seriously and work with business partners who share our common interests of sustainability and social well-being. We constantly strive to act in a way that serves the environment and the earth’s citizens.

Why is CSR so important?
Whether you’re in the business of corporate travel management services or a local pizza shop, a commitment to CSR is essential. It is simply the right thing to do, for the good of your community, your own employees, and the planet. If more companies begin to put the welfare of others over profit, everyone will benefit for generations to come.

More and more job candidates are taking CSR seriously when looking for employers, while customers are choosing to spend their hard-earned money on companies who act in a socially responsible manner. If you are a great company, with great service and CSR principles, you’re going to attract positive recommendations and word-of-mouth going forward.

How does a company display CSR?
One of the first things a company should do is take care of the employees. For example, some companies in the US outsource to countries where workers are paid little and treated poorly. Although it may be more expensive to pay overseas workers a living wage or hire staff locally, it is the socially responsible thing to do for both the world and the local economy, ensuring that no one is contributing to bad foreign labor practices.

Charity work is also an important aspect of CSR, and businesses often showcase their philanthropic efforts. Though some may argue that these events are PR stunts or tax write-offs, it is still a net positive for the charities involved. Companies can also set up volunteering programs for employees, allowing them to give back and dedicate their free time toward causes they support.

What types of causes do CSR-conscious companies get involved with?
It’s common for CSR-conscious companies to get involved with causes that directly relate to their industry in some way. As an example, a corporate travel management company might donate money toward environmental sustainability due to the pollution produced by airplanes. However, what is most important is the positive impact you are having on your employees, community and the world.

Local causes are also great if you’re a brick-and-mortar store within a vibrant local community. It’s not uncommon for local businesses to pitch in toward local sports teams or school initiatives, for example, displaying their commitment to the local economy and community where they operate their business.
